I'm a Research Fellow for the Oxford Programme for the Future of Cities, at the Institute for Science, Innovation and Society, University of Oxford, UK. I hold a PhD in City and Regional Planning (2009) and a Master in Landscape Architecture (Environmental Planning concentration) (1999) from the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and an undergraduate degree (Licenciatura) in Environmental Engineering (1996) from the New University of Lisbon, Portugal.

 

My professional career includes work as lecturer (University of Oxford, Universidade Aberta, Universidade Atlântica), as an environmental planning consultant and as a member of an environmental NGO (APEA). I was one of the founders of the project WTeamUp (2001- ...), a research team focused on interactive participatory processes in the field of environmental planning, management, and research.

 

My latest publication 'How Portugal became an 'unplanned country'' is available on IJURR. I'm the co-author of the book Guadiana Vivo: A Participatory Approach to Planning and Management of the Guadiana Valley Natural Park (In Portuguese: Uma Abordagem Participada ao Planeamento e Gestão do Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana) (ADPM, 2001), and the co-editor of the book Environmental Activism in Society (FLAD, 2002). I also contributed with a chapter to the book City and Citizenship: urban Governance and Citizen Participation in Comparative Perspective) (In Portuguese: Cidade e Cidadania: Governança Urbana e Participação Cidadã em Perspective Comparada) (ICS, 2008).
